In 2009 at the Brewerton Speedway where every week the field of cars resembled a Big Block Modified Super DIRTcar Series Race, the Phoenix, NY high school student was always in the mix against some of the best racers in the business. In the final points run down Wight came in 12th only 41 points out of the top-ten.
At Fulton Speedway on Saturday nights Wight brought home a 7th place points finish where seven weekly drivers were tour regulars.
When there wasn’t a Modified series race Larry and the Gypsum Express Team would call Cayuga County Fair Speedway home on Sunday nights. Once again like Brewerton and Fulton Speedways Larry competed against stout competition finishing 12th when the season ended.
On one of the toughest touring series in the country Wight hit the road on the Modified Super DIRTcar Series in 2009. Running time-trials at each event and seeing some of the tracks for the very first time Larry was always in the mix against tour and track regulars. When the final checkers flew on the series saw a 12th place finish only 36 points out of a top-ten in the final rundown.
On September 5,2010 Larry won the biggest race of his career to this point winning the 100 lap Big Block Modified Series race at Cayuga County Fair Speedway in Weedsport,NY. Wight took the lead on lap 7 from Alan Johnson who is the all-time Big Block feature winner in DIRTcar history.
Once in the lead Wight held off Alan Johnson and Dale Planck for the next 93 laps for the series win.
“Never thought I get a tour win this early so it feels real good right now,” said a quiet yet confident Wight, just beginning his senior year at John C. Birdlebough High School in his hometown of Phoenix, N.Y. “I ran it 100% the whole race and every time I saw lapped traffic just prayed for a caution as I didn’t want to give up my line.”
“We’ve been chasing cars left and right all year, switching cars a lot. Finally got this car this week and haven’t been out of the Top-10 yet. And now we finally got a win,” beamed Wight, following his first Top-5 feature finish in 15 tour races this season.
