FONDA, NY – Years ago Pat Ward used to be a regular at the Fonda Speedway until getting the ride in the Gypsum Express car owned by John Wight and moving his regular racing program to the tracks in Western, NY two of which are now owned by Wight himself.
Saturday evening Ward was back at Fonda and showed all of the Fonda regulars that he hasn’t forgotten how to get around the Montgomery County Fairgrounds track as he led every lap of the 30-lap modified feature event in the Gypsum Express #42P Bicknell car.
The win for Ward was his first at Fonda since the Ice Jam event on April 11, 2009 and his 22nd career win at the Track of Champions.
“The car was so bad in the heat race and we made so many changes to it that I didn’t know what to expect from the car or what was going to happen going into the first turn at the start,” Ward said in victory lane. “I was just hoping that I didn’t slip up in turn one on the first lap and get into A.J. (Romano who started on the outside of the front row).”
Twenty-four cars started the feature event with Ward taking the lead at the drop of the green flag in the caution plagued main event. The first yellow flag was out on lap three for Craig Hanson and Josh Flint who came together in turn four with another yellow on the restart for a “no start” situation.
Ward blasted into the lead again when the race restarted with 2010 track champion Bobby Varin making a move from fifth to second with Ryan Odasz now third. A pileup in turn three on lap five brought out the red flag with almost 10 cars involved. The wreck started when something broke on the front end of Elmo Reckner’s car in turn three forcing him to slow quickly. All of the other cars piled in including Jim Davis who lost a wheel and an axle out of the car but fortunately nobody was injured.
Through each of the five restarts during the event Ward and Varin would make it a two car battle for the lead as they would pull away and make it their own race with the rest of the field strung out behind them. The track was fast on Saturday evening with low 19 second laps still being turned as the race went on to the checkered flag and it was definitely a race of attrition with only seven cars completing the entire 30-lap distance.
“This hasn’t been the best of years for us and I have to thank my crew who changed bars, tire stagger, gears, and tires among other things between the heat race and feature because the car was so bad early on,” Ward said. “That was the best the car has been this year.”
