Labor Day Weekend Is Here; Long Distance Races Just Around The Corner

Posted Sep 1, 2010 by David

PHOENIX, NY September 1, 2010 (By Dave Medler) - With the last week of August racing now in the record books the Gypsum Race Team now looks to the season ending track points racing this weekend before the extra distance events loom on the calendar.

Friday night at the Brewerton Speedway Pat Ward (Gypsum Express No.42p) used patience running the bottom of the speedway as he brought home a second place finish.

After his second place finish Ward talked about his run, “The top was really the only place to be for the first 20-25 laps. I tried the bottom after a couple restarts. I realized after I got back by Danny (Johnson) if I hit it just right I was good down there. Towards the end of the race the top was the fastest. But I think the guys who ran up there sealed their right rear tires. Matt (Sheppard) and I running the bottom kept ours cooler. Towards the end I wasn’t gaining on Alan (Johsnon) and I wasn’t losing anything, so I went back to the top to see if I had anything, Alan was the car to beat tonight.

The most impressive run of the night came from Larry Wight (Gypsum Express 99L) who won the consi and bolted through the field for a fifth place finish in the 35 lap feature.

“If the car is right the track is real racy, we think we have hit on something here,” Wight said about his 5th place run. “We were weaving in and out of traffic, didn’t get in any jingles; we almost got into Bowman (Mike) when he tagged the wall on the front stretch. We started 19th and finished 5th that’s a great night for us. We think we have found something that hopefully will carry us through the rest of the year.”

Billy Decker (Gypsum Wholesalers No. 91) finished seventh. Ryan Phelps (Big Red Towing No.99) and Roy Bresnahan were in a couple incidents that ended their nights early in the feature.

Saturday night at the Fulton Speedway, Billy Decker was part of one of the best battles for a win seen in 20010 on the Fulton High Banks. After 35 laps Decker finished 5th with Pat Ward right behind in sixth. Larry Wight finished 9th and Ryan Phelps finished tenth.

The talk of the night after the heat races was Larry Wight. Wight had a dominating win where he barely burped the throttle as he was just about wide open all the way around the Fulton Speedway.

“The track is wide open all the way around the cushion. It’s a lot of fun, you just get to let loose for 8 laps, then you got to settle down and get ready for the feature.” Wight went on to say experience has taught him you can’t run that way for the feature, in the past he has lost leads late driving that way. As each race passes and laps are run you can see Wight’s driving style behind the wheel getting better and better for the teenager.

Utica-Rome Speedway ran a pair of twin 20’s Sunday night with Pat Ward grabbing two top-fives finishing third and fourth.

At Cayuga County Fair Speedway Ryan Phelps and Larry Wight signed in the pits to get ready for this Sundays 100 lap series race. The top was the quick way around making passing tough in the 35 lap feature. Wight and Phelps finished in the top-ten finishing eighth and ninth.

Today Wednesday, September 1, Larry Wight, Billy Decker and Tim Fuller will be hauling north to the Mohawk Raceway for the rain date 100 lap World Of Outlaw Late Model Series A-Main.
After a day off Thursday it will be four straight days of Big Block Modified racing. Friday at Brewerton Speedway they will have a 50 lap season finale race ending the points chase. Saturday Fulton Speedway will end their points chase for the Big Blocks. Sunday, Pat Ward will be at Utica-Rome Speedway while the rest of the Gypsum Race Team will be at Cayuga County Fair Speedway for a 100 lap Modified Super DIRT Series race. Things will wrap up the Labor Day holiday weekend at Rolling Wheels Raceway for the Robert M Petrocci Memorial 60 paying $4,000 to win.
